When I was down buying tires for my 79 Pace Car I noticed that the owner of the business had a 1968 Coupe tucked back in the shop. It is sans engine right now, but the body is solid, and the interior is all there. Looks like a good project car. Anyhow, I offered to decode the car for him, as he had a few questions about the options on it. It has the GT fog lights, pop-off gas cap and GT style rims, but came with the 2-bbl 289 (C-code? Don't have the nubers in front of me right now). After running the numbers I figure that it originaly came with the Sprint package. He was very happy to learn that the items on the car were stock, and was curious how many 1968 coupes came with the Sprint package. None of my literature breaks that down, however. He knows that the car isn't some super-rare beast that is going to make him rich or anything, but he would like an idea of the number prodced that year just for interest sake. Does anyone here have a breakdown of how many Sprints were made in 1968? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!! ------------------ Cheers, Ian M&M Member #395 ------------------- '79 Mustang Indy 500 Pace Car Ian's Pace Car Website Vancouver Island Mustang Association Website Indy Pace Car Registry of Mustangs Official Website "If you get to thinking you are someone of some importance and influence, just try ordering another persons dog around." - Author Unknown [This message has been edited by Gearhead (edited 06-08-2001).]

Well, according to MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS, by Kevin Marti, ther were 25,012 of the Sprint A pkge. and 15,106 of the Sprint B pkge. Interestingly, there was only 1 of the fastbacks in each pkge, and only 1 cvt in the A package. I'll have to guess which one the guy's car is so I'll pass.

Ian, There is not a lot of information on the '68 Sprint's, but here is what I found:From: Mustang 64 1/2 - 1968 Tom Corcoran Sprints were offered in two unique equipment packages, generally referred to as Sprint "A" and Sprint "B". Sprint "A": Was available with either six-cylinder or V-8 engines, included the C-shaped side striping, wheel lip moldings, full wheel covers and a pop-open gas cap. Sprint "B": For eight-cylinder Mustangs only, had the side stripes, gas cap, and wheel lip moldings, but replaced the full wheel covers with argent painted Styled Steel wheels and added E70 Wide Oval white sidewall tires and grile-mounted fog lamps. According to information gathered by J.R. Gillespie, other options, such as the Tutone (black striped) hood, the Interior Decor Group, and the hardtop vinyl roof could be combined with the Sprint Package. Canadian Ford dealers also offered a Spring Promotion model of the Mustang. Sounds like this fellow has the Sprint "B" package to me!! Cheers to You Ian. Hope this helps. That's excellent information!! This fellow will be super happy when I pass this along to him. From the information you provided I would definitely say that this is a Sprint B package car. The C stripe is missing, but the car has been repainted at some point, so it could have been left off then. The car has a DSO for Los Angles, so it has made its way North of the border at some point. When he found out it might be a Sprint he started making plans to put it back to its original color, and keep it looking pretty close to stock. The original engine is gone, but he has a nice stout little 302 that he will drop in until he can locate a 68 289. Overall the car is very solid though.I may get an even deeper discount on my BFG Radial TA tires that I am getting from him tomorrow once I pass this along! Cheers, Ian P.S. Anyone have a picture of a '68 Sprint B with the C-stripes installed?? [This message has been edited by Gearhead (edited 06-08-2001).]

Ian, Glad to be a help and I hope it helps cut the cost of the tires for your Pace Car!! I will take a look through the books and see what I can find for you. If I find what you are looking for, I will scan it and send it to you via e-mail. Next time you talk to the fellow, why don't you hook him up with Mustangsandmore.com?!! Mellow, you say: "Interestingly, there was only 1 of the fastbacks in each pkge, and only 1 cvt in the A package." In the good ol' days when I barely knew the front of my car from the back, I thought I had a Sprint car 'cos I had the mounts for the GT lamps. Now I think they were probably added. But are you serious? Out of all those thousands of Sprint cars in '68, only TWO were fastbacks? Or have I misunderstood?[This message has been edited by Fastback68 (edited 06-08-2001).]

OK! You made me get in the book again. LOL! Yes, I re read the page and that is correct. Also, according to the book, only 10 '68 Mustangs were produced with the exterior decor group. That group isn't even listed in the facts and sspecifications manual.

Ian, You have e-mail with a jpg file attached. I manage to find a picture of a 68 Sprint "B" for you. I hope the file didn't come out to large. Enjoy and hopefully this will help your tire guy out. Dave & Terri ------------------ 66 "C" Code Coupe (Sally) MCA#47921 M&M #166

That makes two of us, Ian. I also like research projects, when it comes to Mustangs. I learn more, about Mustangs, that way. Dave & Terri ------------------ 66 "C" Code Coupe (Sally) MCA#47921 M&M #166 [This message has been edited by Dave Gibson (edited 06-10-2001).]
