I have a 72 Mach 1 Mustang with a ford 9" rear end and I wanted to know if there was an easy way to tell if it was a 31 spline or 28 spline axle. The door code is not on the car anymore so I dont know much about the axle. Also the car does not have posi and I am open for suggestions on what gears I should go with. It is a 351C 4V 4speed car and I want it to be a real quick car but I still want to be able to drive it somewhere without tacking it out.

Thanks for any info

for the most part the 31 spline axles are larger than the 28 spline axles. the are exceptions though so the best way is to count the splines.

As far as gear ratio, try 3.55s. They are a good compromise.
BTW you probably have 28 spline axles, but there's only one way to be certain.

One way to be very sure without counting is to look at the end of the axle near the studs in the center if its solid and not a oval shaped hollow its probably a 31 spline

Look at the axle flange. An oval hole is a 28 spline, two large holes and counter sunk center is a 31 spline.
