In my 70 Mach 1, there was originally a thin insulation (about 1 inch thick, plastic backed) glued to the firewall. This was above the thick, heaver insulation pad that runs from the top of the carpet. The lighter insulation runs up to the defroster vents. When I began the interior restoration, the old insulation was already broken down and falling out. I can't find a replacement anywhere. Does it exist? Is there a substitute?

National Parts Depot has a 'Firewall Pad Kit' under part number 01610-4A for $44.95 which I believe is the pad you describe that covers the firewall from carpet to cowl.

So. looking at my Osborne Interior Assembly Manual, it appears you are looking for part number 020A42 'Absorber - cowl top panel, sound.' It runs from cowl to windshield. I don't see that in the NPD catalog, but it might be worth it to call them and see if they do have it. They do have stock that isn't listed in the catalog, for space reasons.

Otherwise, you could find plastic backed insulation at home centers or acoustic installation specialists, maybe even a Radio Shack.

You might want to check out Thermo-Tec's insulation, too.
