While doing some engine bay detailing on my '68 coupe, I found an I.D. tag screwed to the bay(radiator support) just behind the passenger side horn and a little to the left. I recall seeing this tag on other cars but mine didn't have one. Or so I thought! I looked a little closer last night and found it heavily coated with paint. So much the phillips head screw was full . It has the correct VIN to match my car, and the interior code and paint code. They are horizontal across the tag. Perpendicular to those numbers are two other codes stamped twice the size and about 1"-1.5" apart. I recall that there were codes stamped for PS and A/C but don't have the numbers. I don't have my tag in front of me, but what are these other codes?

That's called a 'Buck Tag' and it will have all the codes for your car. Engine, Trans, Axle, Paint, Interior trim, etc.

They had those so that as the car came down the line, the assembly people could just glance at it and know what equipment to grab.

So it's essentially like the door tag except for those other codes that are stamped bigger? Thanks Steve! I guess now I will always have a dollar (Buck) to my name! No, please don't throw tommytoes, I hate'em!

Much handier than the door tag, especially if the car doesn't have doors yet!

If you would like to have an idea about some of the codes besides of the similar door tag codes, have a look at my collection of body buck tag codes at this site
