Hello ive been looking around for a 428 to put back in my Q code 70 Mach. Im VERY green when it comes to FE blocks and especially the visual's of determining whether its a 428 or not. Could some one please tell me how to visually tell if the FE engine is a 428 or just another 390/360?
Thanks for the help.
George.....

George, the easiest way to spot a 428 with the heads on is by the exhaust manifold bolt pattern. All 428's have 4 bolts per exhaust port. Some 390 GT's also have similar layouts but the ports are much smaller than the 428.

George, I have just recently been through the same situation. Here are some good sites to start with:

Good Luck, Todd.

Thanks Alex and Todd. The four bolt pattern is talked about in the 428cj page. I also found out today that the 428's have a external counter balance between the harmonic balancer and timing cover, is this true? It doesnt speak of it in the 428 cj page.
I checked several pages in the forums you linked me to todd but will have to spend more time there is a BUNCH of posts.
Thanks again guys..
George..

George, only the 428 SCJ has the external counter weight on it. It also will have "super" cast into the block.
