For the ones of you that use the Royal Purple (Moneymaker, Capri) is there any measureable difference between it and other synthetics?

I'm currently running Mobil 1 15W-50 in my 383-W. It was worth .04-.05 at the track vs regular oil. Wondering if there would be much to gain going to the more $$ stuff. I run the thicker oil due to the clearances in my engine being a little loose on purpose.

Also, in the other topic: I would be interested in knowing what type trans fluid everyone uses. I've had good service/luck with Havoline type F in my C-6 and C-4's before it.

Later,

David Cole

My shop did some fairly intensive testing on synthetics years ago. The differences between them are negligible. Just go with the correct weight for expected temperatures and engine clearances that will produce a correct range of oil pressure. Mobil1 is as good a choice as any, regardless of the advertising hype for aother brands...

As usual I beg to differ with George on lubricants. About 8 weeks ago I and Tony (Capri) did some extensive dyno testing. Almost 100 pulls between the two engines. A considerable amout of time was spent on synthetic oil comparison. I can tell you in absolute fact that there is a differance in synthetics. Royal Purple #9 made more HP than Synergyn or Mobil 1. As a matter of fact Mobil 1 made no more HP than 5w-30 Castrol GTX! As far as I am concerned Mobil 1 may be a fine product, but I would not waste my money on it if you are looking for additional power or performance. Doccuments available on request! lol Alex

Also David, I'm sorry I forgot to comment on the ATF. At this time I have found no realiable synthetic ATF for racing or high performance applications. We use Motorcraft Type "F" exclusively, but I see nothing wrong with the Havoline products. I use the Havoline oils in our street vehicles when they are on sale. Currantly Havoline 10w40 is $10 a case at Sams club. Great deal. Alex

I stand corrected... the stuff we did is obviously out of date. Still, for my street car, i'll go with Mobil1...

About 4 HP "hot" over Synergyn Steve, and 14 HP over Mobil 1! Alex

Thanks for the input. When it's time for the next change I may well go with the Royal Purple.

The Mobil 1 that's in there now will have do for a little while though. It's only got one bracket weekend on it and it holds 9 qts. Too $$ to drain it yet.

Steve the Castrol 5 W 30 GTX made exactly the same HP as the Mobil 1. That would be 10 and 14 HP respectively more for the Synergyn and the Royal Purple. Alex
