I was looking through my old Super Ford magazines, looking for Alex's intake test. I didn't find it but I did run across an old article on Jack Roush's personal Cobra. The article states Jack wanted a torque monster and a 460 would have been his choice but no aluminum heads for the big block were available at the time. To keep the weight reasonable, he decided to stroke a 400 and use Motorsport 351C aluminum high port heads. Using a custom stroker crank and boring the block 0.030" over, he was able to get 460 cubes out of the 400 block. Adapter plates and a Motorsport high port intake, presumably a Roush piece, were used along with a 780 Holley. The cam was surprisingly mild, a hydraulic Comp Cams 280 with 0.530" lift (article mistakenly states 0.500" lift). Claimed output was 520 HP. Seems high given the mild cam. Perhaps the cam specs were a typo? Or is Jack Roush just that good an engine builder.Dan Jones

That HP doesn't seem that unreasonable to me given the cubic inches. There are a few NHRA 351C stockers making power in that range with even less cam lift. ie: Cook with a 72 HO goes 10.8's @124-5 and Youngblood 71 Boss 10.48 @128 (corrected to sealevel)------------------ D French 67 427 Fairlane(A/SA) 73 Mustang 351c

And Picht goes 10.90's with a 72 351 HO in E/S. Brad Harris has Bill Hawks old car and it runs 11.00's in E/SA also with a 72 351 HO.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator Fleet of FoMoCo's too long to list! http://superstockers.homestead.com/week.html

By the way, the article on the intakes was in 1980 or very early 1981 as my feeble memory is beggining to recall. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator Fleet of FoMoCo's too long to list! http://superstockers.homestead.com/week.html

Didn't Hawks car have a hydraulic cammmed 351 in it when he ran it? he was running G/H was't he? Remember him going 11.2 in G about 7-8 years ago and NHRA wanted to see everything and it was all legal. ------------------ D French 67 427 Fairlane(A/SA) 73 Mustang 351c

It still is hydrualic cammend Denny. It can run E/SA with the weight out as a Sportsroof and not a Mach One. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator Fleet of FoMoCo's too long to list! http://superstockers.homestead.com/week.html
