ANYONE HAD EXPERIENCE IN CLEANING UP & POLISHING BOSS 302 HEADS?I have just disassembled a set of Boss 302 heads (they have never been worked over before). I will be using them on a Cleavor motor I will be building shortly. They need to have new valve guides installed. I want to do a little bowl clean up, and short side radius work. May have the valves unshrouded a little too. Need to polish the combution chambers and exhaust ports. I am pretty experienced in working small block heads but never worked on the Boss 302 before. My first impression is that these are pretty thin wall castings. I would appreciate any advice that anyone experienced in working these heads can give. Sure don't want to mess them up. I don't think you want to do too much to the intakes, except for port matching. ------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Administrator '72 Mustang Sprint 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac-Lok '72 Torino 351C 2V/C4/2.75 Open '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC/CD4E

Yes Gene, I agree with Steve 100%. The ports are huge to begin with and need only minor match porting if any. These will not make the greatest amout of low end torque you know Gene. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator Fleet of FoMoCo's too long to list!

Back in the Muscle Parts days, Ford put out a booklet on preparing the Boss 302 for competition. You can still get reprints of it from various sources. In one section, they illustrate the suggested modifications to the head ports. On the intake side, the recommend opening the area directly below the valve seat and blending. They warn against altering the short side radius.Dan Jones

Gentlemen the advice is well taken. I could see that some smoothing and blending might be called for just below the valve seats. Was was not sure. I know on some early 427 heads a small protrusion just below the valve seat was reported to acutally help the flow (velocity) through the head, and altering it actually hurt rather than help. I am also concerned about exhaust bowl shape behind the guide material on the wall opposite the port exit (seems somewhat restrictive). Just an observation, not a scientific fact ... Is anyone aware of flow numbers for a stock Boss 302 head from .100" lift through .800" in increments of 100? That would help me a little with my desk top dyno iterations on this motor BEFORE I touch the heads. Thanks again ... keep the comments coming! Alex The heads are a C0ZE 6090 A, both are date coded September 22, 1969. Heads have been left stock. I have some interesting pictures of the castings but don't know how to post them here ... maybe you can give me a clue. If you like I can e-mail them to you ... that is if you have an interst. Thanks Gene

Here some flow numbers from the '70 351C 4V quench heads, which are identical to your '70 Boss 302 heads. This was in an article in the December '99 'Mustang and Fords' magazine.
