Should the rocker arm have any side to side freeplay when the value is closed?

Welcome Rob! Depending on the camshaft type (solid or hydraulic) there should be a little play side to side. More with a solid cam that has a lash. Alex

I rebuilt it with a Summit 204/214 .484-.510 hyd. cam. I installed the reccomended value springs along with new rockers and pushrods. they did not have free play before tear down and I didn't if some was acceptable.

Unless the engine is running, or you have a drill running the oil pump to pump up the lifters, you should have some play unless the pushrods are to short. Alex

By the way, all high performance hydraulic lifters have a very fast bleed down rate. Alex
