Hey guys. I was trying to check my valve to piston clearance tonight. After claying the relief area in the piston I installed a cyl. head with no gasket (should be here by end of the week) I then installed the lifters, STOCK pushrods, and tried to install the rockers(roller). With no head gasket and the stock push rods there is maybe 1 thread showing thru the top of the rocker. My head gaskets will have a compressed height of .039". I don't feel that that will make enough difference to allow me to install the rockers. My plan was to just check piston/valve clearance now. And then determine proper pushrod length after heads are installed with gaskets. My cleveland heads are machined for manley guide plates and have single groove manley valves and Harland Sharp roller rockers. Does this scenario sound correct? I believe that the Boss 351 used shorter push rods than the other clevelands (mine is a 72 CJ). I plan on using Trick Flow hardened chromemoly pushrods ($78 from summitt) once I determine the proper length needed. The cylinder heads were milled .005" and I believe the block about the same (just to level the decks). Also the cam has the stock base circle (CAM Research 291/300 .540/.560). Thanks for any info. Tom

I thought all 351C push rods were the identical 8.250" length, with the only difference being the Boss 351/HO {D0OZ-6565-F} hardened for use with guide plates.Where did you get your studs? I have to ask this, sorry, but you do have the fulcrums on the rockers with the 'flats' facing up don't you? ------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Administrator Latest Update: Mustangsandmore.com T-shirts Available!!! Steve, I feel like an idiot. I went and tried installing a rocker with the flat up and I was able to get it installed. After I finish assembling the engine how much lifter preload should I initially adjust the rockers for? Thanks, Tom

Tom don't feel bad, we all get a little tired and miss things once and a while. 1/4 turn after contact is all of the lifter preload you require. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator

Tom, if it will make you feel better, I'll tell you about the time I mistook a o on a multi-keyway crank sprocket for a timing mark. After I tried to start it, I had to go shopping for 8 pushrods! Boy I felt dumb! LOL

Or how about buying a high dollar NHRA approved balancer that wasn't even degreed!!! And then having them tell you to do it yourself with a magic marker!!!!! lol(not at the time) Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator

That's bad.I bought a timing cover for my 351C from Ford once and the holes over the area where the timing chain is, {that receive the water pump bolts} were punched, but not tapped. I was not impressed. ------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Administrator Latest Update: Mustangsandmore.com T-shirts Available!!! For more info, go to; https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Tshirtphotos.html
